Why We Love What We Do
Behind every dance teacher is a little dancer who fell in love with the studio, the competitions, the friendships, and the work.
We asked our instructors for a positive memory from their childhood as a dancer, and they did not disappoint. Highland dance offers so many opportunities, experiences, and moments of connections that shape our lives. Read the wholesomeness below!
Nicole's Memory
Having her #1 cheerleader by her side
“My positive memory is attending every competition when I was little with my grampy <3
Kendra's Memory
Belonging to a community of friends
“One memory that stands out about dance during my childhood is the feeling of community among my dance friends. When we went to the Perth Andover Highland Games we made sure to camp with everyone!
“This [photo] was from my first Perth Andover Highland Games and we did a dance called the Spanish Fling.”
Kate's Memory
“Most of my favourite memories are from road trips I took with my dance friends for competitions. The one that sticks out to me as being the start of my love of traveling to competitions, particularly Canadians, was SDCCS in Montreal in 2013.
“It was my first year in Premier and I didn’t make the provincial team, but I couldn’t even be sad about it because I had SO much fun with my friends that week. Any NB dancer who went to Montreal knows that so many things went wrong during that week (personal example: I got food poisoning), but it was still such a positive experience. I vividly remember crying on the drive home because I was so sad it was over (and probably over-tired).
From then on, I was hooked on SDCCS.”
Lauren's Memory
Finding joy in traveling for competition
“A positive memory from my childhood as a dancer was the first time I ever got to travel for highland! 2014 Canadian Championships in Vancouver. I was 11 years old and in Novice. This first travel experience opened the door for so many more compeitions!!”
Hannah's Memory
Finding confidence on stage
“A positive memory that stands out to me from my childhood as a dancer would be my very first dance competition. I was always a very shy kid and was scared to get up on stage, but I’m so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone because I ended up loving it.
“Dance helped my confidence grow so much as a kid and taught me a lot.”
Paying That Positivity Forward
These baby dancers grew up to be instructors who are passionate about providing students with not only the tools and motivation they need to succeed in reaching their individual goals, but also providing a positive studio environment. It’s the friendships, experiences, and connections that stick with us years later❤️
