Costume Guide: Where Can You Buy Highland Dance Supplies?

Where to Buy Highland Dance Costumes and Supplies

We’ve covered a lot of topics about the world of competitive highland dance on this blog, but there’s always one question still being asked at the studio, competition, and online.

Where do you buy all of this stuff?

You can’t exactly order a kilt on Amazon. I mean, maybe you can. But it’s probably not legit enough to compete in.

We’re going to cover where you can get used, new, and custom highland dance costumes. Plus, where to find dance class essentials, ghillies, and everything else you could need as a highland dancer!

Where to Find Used Costumes

Your best bet for used costumes is probably your local dance community or Facebook.

Ask around your dance studio if there are outfits for sale, or check out one of the many Facebook buy and sell groups!

At certain larger competitions, like the ScotDance Canada Championship Series, some vendors like The Purple Ghillie, MacIsaac Kiltmakers, and others will likely have used costumes for sale. This is a great opportunity to be able to try them on before you buy, but there are usually only a handful of these opportunities each year.

Where to Find New and Custom Costumes

There are lots of vendors out there who make costumes in standard sizes and with custom-made options. From kilt socks to velvet jackets, to aboyne vests, to jig costumes, you can find so many unique options.

  • MacIsaac Kilt Makers specialises in quality, custom kilt outfits for highland dance.
  • TartanTown carries all components of highland dance costumes in diverse colours and standard sizes.
  • Highland in Style carries all components of highland dance costumes in diverse colours, standard and custom sizes.
  • Karen’s Kilts creates custom highland dance outfits to your specific needs and measurements.
  • Bonnie Tartan is based in Scotland and custom-makes highland dance outfits to your specific needs and measurements.
  • Thistle Do Nicely Designs custom-makes highland dance outfits to your specific needs and measurements.

And many more! A Google search will get you a long way.

Each of these vendors has their own practices when it comes to ordering, measurements, and whether they do in-person booths at competitions. Check out their pages to learn more!

Where to Find Ghillies (Dance Shoes)

There are many different brands of highland dance ghillies out there. As dancers get more competitive experience, they’ll likely develop a preference for the brand of shoes they use in competition, as they vary in leather thickness, shaping, sole thickness, and more.

And others!

You can find these for sale directly through the brand or through various vendors including For Reel Apparel (hey Saorsa Studio dancers – we have shoes in stock at the studio for you to try on!), the Purple Ghillie, Tartan Town, and several others from the list of vendors in the above section.
